The Green Party & Lewisham Greens
What we stand for

Nationally, the Green Party…

Opposes privatisation of public services and council housing and expensive private finance schemes that treat our hospitals and schools like businesses.

Is calling for an end to tuition fees and the reinstatement of maintenance grants so that higher education is accessible for all.

Opposed the Iraq war, and wants to see the UK disarm its nuclear weapons, not spend billions on replacing the Trident nuclear weapons system.

Believes in Fair Trade not Free Trade, and an ethical foreign policy.

Is pushing for truly comprehensive policies to prevent dangerous climate change; through investment in renewable energy, public transport and energy efficient homes and reducing energy use by localisation of services and economies.

Wants to end factory farming and replace animal experiments with ethical alternatives.

Locally, Green councillors have …

Pushed for decisive action in tackling climate change: Green councillors secured funding to get solar panels installed in two local primary schools.Greens also successfully pushed for stronger policies on green energy in new buildings in the Borough's planning guidelines.

Protected public services: Green councillors successfully overturned significant cuts to services for elderly and vulnerable adults. Greens have been active supporters of Lewisham's Keep the NHS Public campaign.

Supported local shops: a Green proposal saw a new range of cotton shopping bags launched in Lewisham, to promote local shops and reduce waste.

Pushed to reduce waste and increase recycling: Green budget proposals led to a pilot scheme to collect garden waste and extra funding to publicise recycling in the borough.

The Green Party believes that environmental sustainability and social and international justice go hand in hand.
