At
the local elections Greens promised that they would seek to reverse
the decision to close down the leisure centre if Labour lost overall
control on the Council. That promise has been delivered.
In
June, Green councillor, Darren Johnson, tabled a motion calling
on the Mayor to appoint independent experts to look at alternative
sites for a new school and safeguard Ladywell Leisure Centre until
a replacement was built. The motion was supported by all opposition
councillors and led to Labour’s first defeat at a council meeting
in 35 years. Following this review of alternative sites, Lewisham
Bridge Primary School has now been chosen as the site for the new
school, combining both primary and secondary education.
Green
Councillor, Romayne Phoenix, commented:
"This
is a fantastic victory for local people. Ladywell Leisure Centre
was always the wrong site for a new school. For far too long Labour
refused to listen to the alternatives and paid the price with heavy
seat losses."
Green
Councillor, Darren Johnson, added, "I am delighted the Mayor finally
did a U-turn. We will now work constructively with him to make sure
local children get the first class school they deserve."
