Greens are predicting they could win up to six seats in this May’s
local elections making them a significant presence in the borough
following the election of Darren Johnson as Lewisham’s first Green
councillor four years ago.
Greens
will be fielding candidates in every ward but are particularly confident
of winning two more seats in Brockley, where Darren is already a
councillor, and in neighbouring Ladywell ward, where support for
the Greens has been steadily growing.
Standing
in Brockley Ward, sitting Green councillor, Darren Johnson, is joined
by Romayne Phoenix a former teacher, local sculptor and mother of
three children. Dean Walton, a long-standing Green campaigner who
narrowly missed getting elected in Brockley last time completes
the team.
Standing
in Ladywell, Mike Keogh is a longstanding Ladywell resident and
well-known community campaigner and is also the Green Party’s Mayoral
candidate. He is joined by Sue Luxton, who also lives in Ladywell
and teaches English at a school in Greenwich. Ute Michel, who works
in the NHS supporting marginalised groups, completes the team.
Darren
Johnson, Green councillor for Brockley Ward says, "We are confident
that this will be our best election ever in Lewisham. People feel
terribly let down by Labour locally, and our message of protecting
the local environment and standing up for decent local services
is gaining lots of support."
NOTES
TO EDITORS At the last Council elections in 2002 Darren Johnson
topped the poll in Brockley Ward. Greens missed winning the other
two seats in Brockley by just 24 votes and 74 votes. Greens also
came second to Labour in a further five wards in Lewisham.
