Greens
win six seats in Lewisham
Lewisham
Green Party is celebrating today after winning 6 seats on the council,
topping the poll and taking all seats in both Brockley and Ladywell
wards. Darren Johnson, Romayne Phoenix and Dean Walton have all
been elected to serve as Green councillors in Brockley ward, while
Mike Keogh, Sue Luxton and Ute Michel overturned a large Labour
majority to win in neighbouring Ladywell ward.
Greens
are now the third biggest party on Lewisham Council. Green councillor
Darren Johnson, commenting on the success in Lewisham, said: "We
are absolutely delighted. We proved what a difference we could make
with one councillor - people saw that and wanted more. Absolutely
delighted."
Sue
Luxton, Green councillor for Ladywell ward added: "the voters
of Ladywell have sent a clear message to Labour. Local opposition
to the planned closure of Ladywell Leisure Centre is huge and has
undoubtedly played a key role in the swing from Labour to Green
Party."
In
the elections for Lewisham mayor, candidate Mike Keogh polled 7,168
votes (12%). Full results for Lewisham can be found at http://www.lewisham.gov.uk.
Elsewhere
in London, Greens gained seats in Hackney, Islington, Camden, Lambeth
and Southwark.
