The
most comprehensive study of the London Borough elections, by leading
academic Tony Travers, has forecast possible Green gains in Lewisham.
The report – ‘Predicting London’s Local Elections’, which forecasts
the likely outcome for each of the 32 London boroughs, states, "The
Greens hope to capture six seats in 2006, and Darren Johnson's dual
role as a local councillor and London Assembly Member may help them
pick up seats in Brockley."
Greens
will be fielding candidates in every ward but are particularly confident
of winning two more seats in Brockley, where Darren is already a
councillor, and in neighbouring Ladywell ward, where support for
the Greens has been steadily growing.
Darren
Johnson, Green councillor for Brockley Ward says, "We are confident
that this will be our best election ever in Lewisham and this comprehensive
academic study backs up our case. People feel terribly let down
by Labour locally, and our message of protecting the local environment
and standing up for decent local services is gaining lots of support."
NOTES
TO EDITORS:
At
the last Council elections in 2002 Darren Johnson topped the poll
in Brockley Ward. Greens narrowly missed winning the other two seats
in Brockley and also came second to Labour in a further five wards
in Lewisham.
